Services
The services below describe some of the ways that we can work together.
Individual Counselling
I can work with you to identify and understand your emotions, which are often at the root of personal struggles.
By becoming more aware of these emotions it becomes easier to manage and regulate them and I can provide you with tools and strategies to do this effectively.
I can help you to process emotional wounds and trauma from the past so that you can move forward with a sense of freedom and resilience. Using the therapeutic process, I can help you build a stronger sense of self-worth and self-compassion, which builds self-esteem and overall mental health. By transforming negative emotional patterns into positive ones, you can make lasting changes in your life and relationships, giving you a sense of fulfillment and control over your life circumstances.
Relationship Counselling
I am passionate about helping couples to restore their relationships by strengthening the emotional bond between them. Using Emotionally Focused Therapy, which is based in Attachment Theory, I can help partners understand and address the emotional needs and fears that drive their conflict so that couples can reconnect on a deeper emotional level. Learning to communicate your needs and emotions more effectively will reduce misunderstanding, allowing you to respond to each other with empathy and support, fostering a secure emotional attachment. This sense of security builds trust allowing each partner to feel more confident and supported in the relationship.
Grief Counselling
Grief comes in many forms and is not always related to the loss of a person. Humans grieve the loss of pets; place/home; stage of life; relationships; status, to name a few.
We all respond to grief and/or loss differently and it is my priviledge to sit alongside you as you process your pain and work out what you need to heal.
I will validate the intense emotions that come with grief, such as sadness, anger, guilt and confusion and offer you the space to express these feelings in a way that helps you feel supported and understood.
I can also help you address any unresolved issues that might keep you stuck in your grief. I will be alongside you as you work out how to navigate life and find new purpose and meaning, integrating the loss into your life while honoring the memory of who or what you have lost.
Marriage Preparation or Enhancement
I am a Prepare Enrich facilitator and would love to work with you to help you prepare for your commitment to each other.
This can be as preparation for marriage or to enhance any committed relationship.
The usual format is that we meet for a session to get to know each other and to help me understand your relationship and any concerns or questions you might have.
Then you each complete an online assessment before we meet for three more sessions to discuss and work through the strengths and growth areas in your relationship.
Alternatively, I can send you a link for the assessment and we can then meet for 4 sessions to work through the results.
These sessions are fun and informative as well as relationship building. This is a great investment in your future together.
Perinatal Trauma, Grief or loss
With my background in Midwifery and Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing, I really understand the complexity of Infertility, pregnancy, childbirth, prematurity and/or newborn illness, when things don't go to plan.
These are experiences that most people aren't even aware of and so make it even more isolating to endure.
If you are struggling with anything that involves pregnancy, birth, prematurity or illness in the newborn period, I understand and it would be my priviledge to listen to your story and help you process the pain and disruption that you have experienced.
Trauma
I provide a safe, supportive and non-judgemental space for you to explore your traumatic experiences. I use Emotionally Focused Therapy to help you identify and understand the emotional responses associated with your trauma. Your safety is paramount so we work at your pace and I will help you to manage and regulate intense emotions so that they are less overwhelming. I will help you to identify the resources in your life that can be a vital source of healing, strength, and building resilience for maintaining long term wellbeing and mental health.
Life Transitions
Sometimes in life, we can just feel stuck or hopeless, not quite sure what is wrong with us. This is normal when experiencing a change in our lives that we might not have the tools to manage. Sometimes, we don't even realise what it is that is keeping us stuck. Major milestones like adult children leaving home; retirement; immigration; downsizing from your family home; starting a new job; finishing your studies and looking for work, can contribute to a mixture of feelings that are difficult to navigate. Having someone to help you sort through and make sense of your feelings can lift the weight and clear the path for you to move forward.
Christian Counselling
I acknowledge and respect human individuality and diversity and I am open to working with clients from all cultural and spiritual walks of life.
I am a practicing christian and for clients who wish to incorporate their own beliefs into therapy, it can provide a more personalised and meaningful therapeutic experience.
Working respectfully and ethically, I will seek to understand how your faith influences your emotions and relationships and how it can be a resource in our sessions together.
This includes opportunities to use:
-
Scripture to support themes that arise
-
The secure attachment base that God provides
-
Christian principles that may support the
therapeutic process especially overcoming guilt and
shame
-
Addressing spiritual struggles and the impact of trauma
on faith
If this interests you then I can help you to integrate your spiritual beliefs into emotional healing using a holistic approach that can lead to more comprehensive and lasting healing.
Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
EAP is a free, voluntary and confidential well-being service provided by most employers. The objective is to provide short-term support to employees who may be experiencing personal or work related concerns that affect their personal well-being and/or their perfomance at work. This could include marital and family concerns; personal and emotional; stress and burn-out; critical and traumatic incidents; grief and any other concerns that affect or could affect personal well-being or work performance.
If your employer offers an EAP program, you can ask whether you can choose your own EAP provider and how many sessions are available to you. If this is available to you, we can arrange an appointment to discuss your concerns. From there, I can help you to work out what your goals are and together we can establish a short-term plan for you to manage the situation.
There is no requirement for reporting back to your employer, usually they just need confirmation of attendance at sessions.
If it is determined that longer term support is needed, we could continue to work independently of EAP or alternatively, I could provide a referral.

Testimonials
We had a great experience with Mustard Seed Counselling for our pre-marital counselling. It was both of our first times in any sort of counselling environment and Sue made us feel at ease and created a truly safe and open environment for our discussions.
Using the Prepare-Enrich assessment, the counselling helped facilitate discussions and gave us tools and techniques to help with communication and intimacy. We walked away feeling more connected and prepared for the journey ahead. Highly recommend Sue and Mustard Seed Counselling to any couple looking to build a strong foundation before tying the knot!

FAQ's
Sessions are for 60 minutes and cost $140 for individuals and $160 for couples. Private health rebates should apply if you have counselling services as an extra, but it is recommended that you call your fund and check your level of cover. Medicare rebates do not apply for counselling so you do not need a Mental Health Plan or a referral from a GP.
Life doesn't always go according to plan and you may need to cancel or reschedule. However, this hour has been set aside for you, so in order to give other clients a chance to book, please give at least 48 business hours notice of any changes you might need. If you cancel or change your appointment within 48 hours or don't arrive for an appointment, you may be charged the full session fee.
This depends entirely on you and is best discussed after your first appointment. For clients who are dealing with a new issue, it may only take one or two sessions. For clients who have been struggling with an issue for many years, it is likely to take longer. Relationship counselling usually requires around four to eight sessions together and one or two individual sessions each, and progress is helped by regular appointments. You may prefer to meet weekly for a while and then change to monthly sessions.
Before your first session, you will receive two forms to fill in online. The one collects some background information and the other is an agreement about how we will work together and how confidentiality works. You will receive confirmation and a reminder before your appointment.
When you arrive for your first session, I will greet you in the waiting area and take you to the counselling room. You are welcome to bring any information, but there is no need to prepare for the session. I will guide you during the session as I get the information I need and based on this, we will make a plan for future appointments.
Absolutely. Counselling sessions are available face to face, by phone or via zoom. If you choose online sessions, you will be sent a zoom link so you need to download zoom and have a reliable internet connection. For phone or zoom sessions, you need to be in a private space to protect your confidentiality. This may be in a car, but you may not be driving. Face to face sessions take place in a room in College Park.
Counselling is a safe and confidential service between a qualified professional and a client that aims to resolve identified concerns, promote mental wellbeing and enhance self-understanding. Topics explored in counselling may include relationships with self and others, past experiences, trauma, domestic violence, child abuse, subtance use or addictions, parenting, grief and loss, life transitions such as retirement or adult children leaving home, spirituality and other experiences.
Friends and family can provide a valuable source of support but sharing with them may affect the relationship. Professional counsellors provide an objective and safe space for you to express and discuss your thoughts, feelings and behaviours without bias or judgement.
